Summer & Articling Student Programs

Dimock Stratton continues to grow. And with good reason: we have proven trial experience (and results) second to none, a team of lawyers with expertise ranging from trade-marks to DNA, and some of Canada's most highly regarded IP practitioners. We have acted as counsel in some of the highest profile IP matters before the Supreme Court, such as Kirkbi AG v. Ritvik Holdings (Lego v. Mega Bloks) and Robertson v. Thomson Corp., and our prosecution group works with some of the top innovators in Canada and abroad. Our clients range from individual inventors to Fortune 100 companies in such diverse fields as high technology, software, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.

As a Toronto boutique firm practising exclusively in the area of intellectual property law, we offer our students the opportunity to experience all aspects of the practice of law within our specialty, from the acquisition of patent and trade-mark rights to intellectual property litigation.

Our articling and summer students gain "hands-on" experience drafting court documents, patent and trade-mark examiner responses, research memoranda, and opinions. In addition, students will have the opportunity to attend on discoveries, cross-examinations, motions, or other court proceedings with lawyers from the firm. When possible, we try to provide our students with tasks which allow them to use their technical background or expertise. To maintain our high standards, we conduct weekly practice meetings and hold internal professional development seminars.

We offer a friendly, supportive, and interactive work environment. All of our students are welcome to consult any of our lawyers for assistance or discussion on their roles in the firm, specific legal points, and the practice of law in general. In accordance with the Law Society of Upper Canada rules, each articling student is assigned a principal, usually one of the lawyers on the Student Committee. Similarly, one of our lawyers will act as a mentor for each of our summer students. Our principals and mentors act as a primary resource and liaison between the student and the firm.

We are looking for students who have a demonstrated interest in intellectual property law and a technical background, such as engineering or the sciences, are eager to learn, and are able to work with all members of the firm. We employ three summer and three articling students each year.

Dimock Stratton LLP offers compensation and benefits commensurate with comparably-sized intellectual property law firms in the Toronto area.

We conduct our interviews in accordance with the guidelines set out by the Law Society of Upper Canada.
